This and the next photograph show a section of tarp ready to be lifted to the roof. It was so large and heavy that Jim Gumbert could not carry it with him as he climbed the ladder. It was placed on a makeshift wooden sled and pulled up the ladder to the roof, as seen in photographs twelve through twenty-one. | Lumber gathered to build a purlin cradle to avert an imminent roof collapse of the 1857 Barn's roof.

This and the next three photos are of the northeast corner of the upper level in the 1857 Barn. The severely water-damaged purlin can be seen in these photos, especially numbers ten and eleven. If it had completely broken, the roof in that area would have almost certainly collapsed.
