Depending upon what section of the
1857 Barn's roof was to be covered, tarps were sometimes joined together on the ground using tie straps. If anchor ropes
were being used, those were also attached. The idea was to minimize the work that needed to be done by Jim Gumbert on the dangerously weak roof.

Multiple tarps joined together were too heavy for Jim Gumbert to safely carry to the roof via ladder. They were instead lashed
to a makeshift sled and pulled up to the roof by Jim, once he was on the roof.
