One through three: Jim Gumbert with his theodolite. Jim used it for a number of things during the time at the barn, such as precisely locating the barn and other structures in relation to a known fixed point, a survey pin in nearby South County Road 25A. It was also helpful in leveling the upper level floor in the 1857 Barn, which had sunk more than a foot in some places. Unfortunately, many of Jim's survey notes were misplaced or lost, and as of this writing, are unavailable. | ||

A survey witness mark used by Jim Gumbert to level the upper floor of the 1857 Barn. Photograph six reveals faint scribe marks on the vertical wooden beam. These marks were used to locate where the beam would have to be hollowed out so that the smaller horizontal beam could be mated to it. |
