These photos show Jim Gumbert finishing the deployment of tarps on the entire west roof of the 1857 Barn. Unfortunately, the two by fours holding the tarps down that were nailed or screwed to the rafters below them soon loosened and broke free, allowing the tarps to be damaged in strong winds. Eventually a better method was employed to keep the boards in place, and then the tarps themselves failed in less than a year due to weathering. In this author's opinion, they were made of inferior materials, and never should have failed in that short period of time. | The new tarps on the west roof of the 1857 Barn. In the foreground, the remains of a previous tarp design that had failed badly. | |
