Jim Gumbert deploys a large section of tarp to the east side roof of the 1857 Barn. More about this is discussed here. | The pruning pole was used to push the tarp down the roof and over the eaves. Therefore, Jim did not have to walk near the edges of the roof, where it was particularly weak and dangerous. | |

There was real danger for Jim Gumbert of falling through the roof during his work. He wore a safety rope (a small portion of which can be seen here), anchored near both east and west eaves of the barn. If he were to fall through the roof, the rope would go taut very quickly and prevent a long fall to the barn floor below. | ||
